IIASA and Beijing Normal University are co-organizing a symposium titled, The International Symposium on Polycrises and Systemic risks: The need for an integrative approach for assessment and governance. The event will take place in Beijing, China from 9 to 10 May 2024. IIASA Interim Deputy Director General for Science, Wolfgang Lutz, and IIASA Research Group Leader, Reinhard Mechler, will participate in the event to bring together different communities of risk and hazard research, explore their commonalities, and discuss improved policy options for dealing more effectively with systemic risks in the future.

By how much did life expectancy fall because of the COVID-19 pandemic? A new study suggests that pandemics require a new method to accurately calculate life expectancy: “hybrid life expectancy” takes the duration of the pandemic into account, revealing that health crises have much smaller impact on life expectancy than previous studies have suggested.

Researchers from the Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program are participating in the Third Asian Population Forum. This forum centered around Population Projections for Socioeconomic, Environmental, and Climate Change Analysis will take place in Shanghai from October 31 to November 1, 2023. Preceding the forum, from October 25 to 30, 2023, these experts will contribute their expertise as instructors for the training workshop on Multidimensional and Multiscale Demographic Modeling.

Research Project
