The National Research Foundation (NRF) is the National Member Organization (NMO) representing South Africa’s membership of IIASA. The NRF has established a NMO Committee comprised of members from South African government, government parastatals, funding agencies, research institutions, and universities.

Between 2012 and 2015 IIASA and the South African NMO jointly ran jointly with the South African Department of Science and Technology, the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, the Southern African Young Science Summer Program. Building on the successes of this program, the NMO and the South Africa Department of Science and Technology further decided to evolve and expand these activities to develop capacity for systems analysis in South Africa and the wider region by launching the Southern African Systems Analysis Centre (SASAC).

Supported by the Yidan Prize project funds, the event brought together researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students from Africa and Europe to advance collaboration on education, demography, and sustainable development.

Embracing ecological perspectives, tools, and models to navigate the digital economy

Digitalization has ushered in new markets worldwide and in BRICS countries. However, the concentration of market power and digital resources by only a handful of digital platform ecosystems (DPEs) has also triggered new governance challenges, particularly, for BRICS countries. As part of the dissemination process of the ECOANTITRUST initiative, Elena Rovenskaya delivered a presentation on the adoption of ecological insights and tools to improve understanding of the complex nature of digital platforms, their ecosystems, and their interactions with the wider economy.
