In the light of new technologies and their serious impact on societies and the environment, and in the rise of global changes in natural hazards, the need for cooperation and shared understanding for shaping the future of disaster risk reduction has become clearer than ever. This year’s Disaster Research Days events are more focused on this goal, and IIASA's Cooperation and Transformative Governance Research Group leader, Nadejda Komendantova, was invited to share her innovative insights.

Science meets art: On 14 October at 19:30 CET, the future generation (born in 2050 and 25 years old) will visit the Odeon Theatre in Vienna to understand what people will know, do, fear, hope and dream in 2025.

We are pleased to announce that well-known Austrian broadcast journalist, Nadja Hahn, will join IIASA as Media Relations and Communications Manager in the Communications and External Relations Department from 1 October 2024.

The IIASA Climate Champions initiative will begin with its first workshop on 2 October covering the topic of climate change, climate resilience, and climate justice. Almost 30 students from Vienna and Lower Austria will participate.

We are excited to announce that on Saturday, 5 October, IIASA will open its doors to the Laxenburg community as part of the Laxenburg Open Door Day with various other local institutions and associations. From 15:00-19:00, we will offer our neighbors the unique opportunity to explore Schloss Laxenburg, a place rich in history and significance. Please note that as the tours will cater to local residents, they will be conducted in German.  

The EU Horizon Project HYway (Climate Impacts of a hydrogen economy: The pathway to knowledge) officially kicks-off!  The project is investigating the effects of hydrogen emissions on the climate and the environment.

IIASA’s first-ever Summer School for Systems Modeling took place at the IIASA premises in Laxenburg, Austria from 15-26 July 2024. Kirsten Glenn, Capacity Development Coordinator in the IIASA Capacity Development and Training Unit reflects on the successful completion of this new IIASA initiative.

The first Vienna Climate Biennale took place from April to July. CircEUlar was one of the scientific partners of the Biennale, contributing insights on the potential of circular economy strategies to combat climate change. IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber will deliver a keynote at the upcoming New European Bauhaus Jour Fixe Austria titled, Saving the world in style: The value proposition of the New European Bauhaus.

IIASA researchers are part of the ALFAwetlands project, which aims to map wetlands in the European Union and assess restoration measures to provide maximum benefits for climate and biodiversity. The project partners recently gathered for a Midterm Conference to review implementation progress, present and exchange current results, and discuss further plans.

Pension systems are the bedrock of financial security during retirement, especially in the face of population aging and changing socioeconomic landscapes. There are, however, differences in current pension benefits based on socioeconomic status, raising concerns about fairness and sustainability.
