Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) methods are becoming increasingly important in both science and society. In climate science - where complex biophysical and societal processes interact across diverse temporal and spatial scales, and datasets are often large, heterogenous and incomplete - AI and ML methods offer new powerful solutions.

The Wittgenstein Centre Conference 2026 on Demography and Human Capital will take place from 1–2 December 2026, at the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna, Austria.

IIASA Health, Ageing and Health Systems Research Group Leader, Josephine Borghi, will represent the Institute at the 6th Strategic Leadership Seminar, organized by the African Association for Public Administration and Management (AAPAM) in partnership with the Kenya School of Government. The final conference of the Horizon Europe funded SOS-Water project, titled Defining Safe Operating Spaces for Water-Resilient Futures: Science, Policy and Practice for Sustainable Water Management, will bring together researchers, policymakers, water managers, and practitioners at IIASA in Laxenburg to explore how the concept of a safe operating space can support more sustainable and resilient water management in Europe and beyond.

The final event of the EU funded ForestNavigator project will bring together researchers, policymakers, industry representatives, and other stakeholders in Brussels, Belgium to explore the project’s key results and discuss pathways for the future of Europe’s forests and forest-based sector.

On 4 November, participants of the Österreichische Studienstiftung, the Austrian Academy of Sciences' (ÖAW) talent development programme for outstanding and socially engaged university students, will visit the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Laxenburg for a hands-on workshop on Introduction to Systems Analysis.

Juliette Martin will share insights from her latest research on the governance of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) at a seminar jointly organized by the University of Tokyo and the University of Tsukuba in Tokyo, Japan.

POPJUS researcher Sofia Badini will present findings from the CCMIG-EU project at the 9th Conference on Migration Research in Austria, organized by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the University of Vienna.

IIASA Science Diplomacy Director and Head of Communications and External Relations, Susie Kitchens, will represent IIASA in New York during the UN General Assembly High-level Week 2026 and Science Summit 2026, two major international forums bringing together leaders from government, the UN system, science, and other sectors to address shared global challenges.

How can citizen science help us better understand and monitor the carbon stored in urban trees? This seminar will introduce Tree-Quest, a mobile app for collecting measurements of individual trees, and present results from its 2026 pilot campaign in Austria.

IIASA Senior Research Scholar, Ping Yowargana, will participate in the Concluding Meeting of the 32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum in Prague, contributing to a session exploring the role of science in diplomacy and its potential to strengthen cooperation and trust across borders.

On 21–22 September 2026, IIASA will host leading researchers to advance how climate adaptation outcomes and resilience are measured across Europe.

The meeting is part of the EU funded UNDERPIN project, which brings together partners from nine European institutions to develop practical indicators for assessing whether adaptation efforts are delivering meaningful outcomes. The 16^th International Conference of the Integrated Disaster Risk Management (IDRiM) Society will take place on 5-9 September 2026 in Bali (Indonesia). The conference will focus on discussions around multi-hazard risk, resilience approaches to disaster risk management, with a particular focus on bridging innovation, implementation science, and grassroots action.
