Juliette Martin will share insights from her latest research on the governance of Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) at a seminar jointly organized by the University of Tokyo and the University of Tsukuba in Tokyo, Japan.
Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are increasingly proposed as sustainable solutions for disaster risk reduction and climate adaptation, while offering multiple environmental and socioeconomic co-benefits. However, their successful implementation and upscaling depend on how they are planned, accepted by communities, and governed. This seminar critically explores how NbS planning, social perceptions, and institutional conditions shape NbS uptake, as well as opportunities to improve their implementation and upscaling.
Currently in Kyoto for a research visit, Juliette Martin will present on the governance of nature-based solutions (NbS) and the factors that influence their successful implementation. Drawing on research from different contexts, she will discuss the opportunities and challenges associated with mainstreaming NbS, compare them with traditional infrastructure approaches, and explore policy options that can help bridge the gap between ambition and practice.

Abstract
Nature-based solutions (NbS) are increasingly promoted to address climate change, biodiversity loss and disaster risk, yet a gap remains between policy ambition and on the-ground implementation. This talk examines the governance conditions that explain this gap and shape the uptake and sustainability of NbS. Drawing on transdisciplinary research across different contexts, it brings together evidence on the factors enabling and constraining NbS implementation, comparisons with grey infrastructure, and empirical insights from established systems such as protection forests. It highlights governance challenges and considers policy options for addressing them to support the mainstreaming of nature-based approaches in policy and practice.
