GAINS Model Workshop

Building on the success of our first workshop, IIASA will host the second GAINS Community Workshop on December 1–2, 2026, at IIASA in Laxenburg, Austria, with hybrid participation available.

The workshop will bring together the GAINS community — users, developers, researchers, analysts, and policymakers — to exchange experiences, present applications, discuss recent developments, and help shape future directions for the model and its use.

 A community workshop around four themes

The programme is currently being developed around four broad sessions:

• New methods and analytical capabilities in GAINS
• New applications, sectors, and emerging issues
• GAINS in policy processes
• The GAINS community: applications, needs, and future directions

The IIASA GAINS team will present recent methodological developments, new model capabilities, and examples of how GAINS is being used in policy processes and decision support.

Just as importantly, we would like to hear from the wider GAINS community.

Share your work

If you are using GAINS in research, analysis, or policy work, we invite you to indicate during registration whether you would be interested in presenting your work or sharing an application, experience, methodological development, or policy use case with the group.

Contributions from across the GAINS community are very welcome, including national and regional applications, links with other models and datasets, methodological extensions, sectoral studies, and experiences of using GAINS in practical policy processes.

The detailed agenda will be developed in the coming weeks and will reflect the interests and contributions of participants.

What to expect

The workshop will provide opportunities to:

• learn about recent developments in GAINS;
• hear how the model is being applied in different countries, institutions, and policy contexts;
• exchange practical experiences and methodological insights;
• discuss challenges directly with the GAINS development team;
• meet other members of the GAINS community and identify opportunities for collaboration;
• contribute ideas for future model development, data needs, training, and community activities.
