IIASA, together with the College of Population Studies, Chulalongkorn University, will host an intensive and internationally recognized training in advanced demographic analysis with applications to aging, health, and education, taking place in Thailand from 2–25 November 2026.

This immersive workshop provides a practical and rigorous learning experience for researchers and practitioners aiming to elevate their expertise in demographic methods. The course builds on decades of methodological innovation at IIASA, particularly in the areas of population projections, human capital modeling, and new measures of aging that have shaped international research and policy debates. After three decades of training and 400 alumni from more than 25 countries, the program has a long-standing reputation for combining sound theory with hands-on analysis and real-world applications.

The course is led by IIASA Distinguished Emeritus Research Scholar Sergei Scherbov, one of the world’s foremost experts in demographic analysis, population projections, and measures of aging. With over four decades of experience teaching advanced demographic methods worldwide (including UN-sponsored training courses) and a research record of more than 200 publications, Scherbov brings unparalleled depth and practical insight to the workshop.

A highlight of this year’s program is an advanced module on education-stratified population projections, developed under the Yidan Prize–supported project at IIASA. This module, co-taught with distinguished mathematical demographer Dalkhat Ediev, reflects the project’s emphasis on understanding education’s role in shaping future human capital and demographic futures across diverse contexts.
