IIASA Science Diplomacy Director and Head of Communications and External Relations, Susie Kitchens, will represent IIASA in New York during the UN General Assembly High-level Week 2026 and Science Summit 2026, two major international forums bringing together leaders from government, the UN system, science, and other sectors to address shared global challenges.
Kitchens will take part in discussions at the intersection of science, policy, and diplomacy. Her itinerary includes the Science Summit’s High-Level Dialogue on Science Diplomacy and Global Cooperation, alongside a range of UN engagements closely aligned with IIASA’s research agenda.
Science diplomacy is increasingly important in a world where complex challenges require cooperation across political and national boundaries. This principle has been at the heart of IIASA since its establishment in 1972 as a bridge between scientists from East and West. The United States was one of IIASA’s founding members and remains actively engaged with the Institute today, with US membership currently represented by the National Science Foundation and supported by extensive ongoing scientific collaboration.
Kitchens’ participation builds on this long history, providing an opportunity to strengthen relationships with governments, UN bodies, scientific organizations, and other partners. Her itinerary will also include meetings with multilateral organizations and representatives from IIASA member countries, helping to deepen partnerships and dialogue in areas of mutual interest.
