Experts from Mexico and Europe will explore how better emissions data and modeling can support cleaner air, improved public health, and more equitable climate action in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area.
The event marks the launch of a new 36-month research collaboration examining how climate mitigation measures, including the electrification of public transport, can simultaneously reduce emissions, improve air quality, and protect health.
IIASA researchers Zbigniew Klimont and Gregor Kiesewetter will bring extensive experience in integrated air pollution and climate modeling to the project. IIASA will adapt its GAINS model to the local context, working with the Norwegian Meteorological Institute (MET Norway) and Mexican stakeholders to combine emissions inventories, mitigation scenarios, health impacts, and inequality metrics.
The involvement of MET Norway builds on more than three decades of scientific cooperation between IIASA and Norway. Norway has been an IIASA member country since 1996 and is represented by the Research Council of Norway. This project creates an opportunity to connect Norwegian and IIASA expertise with local knowledge and policy priorities in Mexico.
Led by WRI Mexico, the consortium includes IIASA, MET Norway, the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases (INER), and specialists in public health, environmental economics, and emissions monitoring. The collaboration will also further strengthen IIASA’s partnership with Mexico.
About the project
“Promoting Clean Air in the ZMVM Through Climate Mitigation Actions: A Case Study on Electromobility” is one of eleven projects selected globally - across eight countries - for the Wellcome Trust’s Climate & Health Award for low- and middle-income countries, and one of only two in Mexico.
The project will run for 36 months and is led by WRI Mexico, with a consortium that includes IIASA, MET Norway, INER, and external specialists from various disciplines, including public health, environmental economics, and monitoring.
During the week of September 7-10, 2026, the consortium will hold a series of activities, beginning with a public presentation and the first meeting of the Technical Advisory Committee, as well as a series of technical meetings and seminars featuring various experts.
