SOS-Water final conference: Defining safe operating spaces for water-resilient futures

Coordinated by IIASA, the SOS-Water project set out to develop a multidimensional framework to define a safe operating space for water resources across sectors and spatial scales, taking into account socioeconomic, policy, technological, and climatic changes.

The conference will mark the culmination of four years of collaborative work, presenting the project’s main scientific findings, practical tools, policy insights, and lessons from its river-basin case studies. The program will explore how global sustainability boundaries can be translated into water-management decisions at basin and local levels, and how scientific evidence can inform policy and practical action towards a water-resilient Europe.

IIASA researchers will feature prominently in the program. Water Security Research Group Leader and SOS-Water Project Coordinator, Taher Kahil, will open the conference with a session on why safe operating spaces matter for Europe’s water future and will provide the closing reflections. IIASA researcher Emilio Politti will contribute to a session on digital water technologies and decision support, including Earth observation for water management and the SOS-Water Dashboard developed as part of the project, and will present lessons from the project’s Danube River Basin case study. 

The program will also feature two panel discussions, bringing together perspectives from science, policy, and practice. Discussions will address the transition from planetary boundaries to local action and consider how research can contribute to building a water-resilient Europe. The event will conclude with reflections from Taher Kahil, followed by a networking lunch.
