32nd OSCE Economic and Environmental Forum: Science-based diplomacy for security and stability

In his keynote, Building transnational bridges by multilateral research, Schellnhuber will highlight the importance of international scientific cooperation in addressing complex challenges that transcend national borders, drawing on IIASA’s longstanding role in bringing together researchers and policymakers from around the world to apply systems science to shared global challenges and build bridges through scientific collaboration.

The Economic and Environmental Forum is the main meeting cycle within the economic and environmental dimension of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). It provides a platform for the OSCE’s 57 participating States, international organizations, academia, business, and civil society to identify priorities, exchange good practices, and strengthen political dialogue around economic, environmental, and security-related challenges.

Schellnhuber will deliver the keynote during the opening session on 7 September, following welcoming remarks by Ambassador Raphael Nägeli, Chairperson of the OSCE Permanent Council and Permanent Representative of Switzerland to the OSCE, and Ambassador Bakyt Dzhusupov, Co-ordinator of OSCE Economic and Environmental Activities.

The two-day meeting will explore how new technologies, scientific cooperation, and strategic foresight can contribute to security and stability. Discussions will address topics ranging from emerging technologies and transboundary water governance to environmental monitoring, artificial intelligence, and the use of systems analysis and scenario modeling to better anticipate interconnected socioeconomic, environmental, and security risks.

Schellnhuber will be accompanied by IIASA Science Diplomacy Director and Head of Communications and External Relations, Susie Kitchens, and Senior Research Scholar, Ping Yowargana, reinforcing IIASA’s growing engagement at the intersection of systems science, science diplomacy, and international cooperation.
