IIASA will host the first author meeting of the upcoming Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Spatial Planning and Connectivity Assessment in Laxenburg from 22-26 September 2025. The meeting will bring together experts from around the world to launch work on the assessment, which will evaluate knowledge and methods for integrated spatial planning and ecological connectivity to support the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

In 2024, IIASA strengthened its position as a trusted science diplomacy actor by deepening engagement with international institutions and supporting evidence-based policy dialogue across global platforms.  

As part of its mission, IIASA aims to provide scientific guidance to policymakers by finding solutions to global problems through applied systems analysis. Through interdisciplinary research and international collaboration, the Institute delivers independent, science-based insights into critical policy issues, supporting evidence-informed decision-making on challenges such as climate change, energy security, and sustainable development. 

From 16-26 June 2025, global climate leaders will gather in Bonn for the 62nd session of the UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies (SB62), laying the groundwork for COP30 in Belém. As an international leader in systems analysis and climate research, IIASA is actively contributing to global climate discussions at the event.

The Second Austrian Assessment Report on Climate Change (AAR2) provides a comprehensive scientific analysis of climate change spanning approximately 800 pages, showing ways to a sustainable transformation towards climate neutrality and a sustainable, just society.

On 30 May 2025, IIASA, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the National Institute for Economic Research of Moldova (NIER) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to improve national migration research and demographic projections to address radical population decline in the country.

Preventing deforestation is critical to avoid reaching the Amazon’s "tipping point" — a threshold beyond which irreversible cascading effects could transform vast areas of rainforest into savanna. As effective forest monitoring is central to combating deforestation, this event will highlight Brazil’s state-of-the-art monitoring tools for the Amazon.

On 14 February 2025, IIASA welcomed H.E. Ambassador Vu Le Thai Hoang, Permanent Representative of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam to the International Organizations in Vienna, to explore advancing research cooperation between IIASA and Vietnam.
