The Austrian Academy of Sciences (OeAW), an IIASA National Member Organization, in collaboration with the European Academies Science Advisory Council (EASAC) regularly hosts Joint Academy Days to engage in discussions on matters of scientific and science to policy issues. The next event as part of the series will focus on sustainable energy solutions. IIASA Program Director and Principal Research Scholar Keywan Riahi will participate in a panel discussion.

Wolfgang Lutz, who will assume his tenure as IIASA Acting Director General on 1 November, will participate in the Working Group Meeting of the Federation of Austrian Industries, focusing on the competitiveness of the Lower Austrian industry sector.

The IIASA TRUST Strategic Initiative is set to take an important role at the upcoming “Connect. Collaborate. Create. Bridging communities to foster participatory research and citizen science” Conference, scheduled from October 19-21, 2023, at Aubervilliers, Campus Condorcet in Paris.

This meeting will focus on synthesizing and integrating the information obtained form all technical work packages, including the results of measurements and modelling. The synthesis will also take into account the results from previous research and from other ongoing projects.

Organized by the European Urban Knowledge Network, the Polish Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy and the French National Agency for Territorial Cohesion (ANCT), the event “Driving a just Twin Transition” is dedicated to unpacking the concept of the Twin Transition. Throughout the event, speeches, presentations and panel sessions will delve into the main opportunities and challenges pertaining to the Twin Transition, including ensuring inclusive citizen engagement and fair access to digital and green urban infrastructure.

Wolfgang lutz will present "The applicability and intercultural acceptability of the Years of Good Life (YoGL) indicator in measuring wellbeing" at a roundtable meeting on the Demography of Sustainable Wellbeing organized by Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok, Thailand.

The 5th European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) conference will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 3 - 6 April 2024. This is one of the leading citizen science events in Europe, where people from multiple backgrounds and disciplines will discuss citizen science and explore its potential for addressing societal and environmental issues. Colleagues from the Novel Data Ecosystem for Sustainability (NODES) Research Group are involved in ECSA and will run workshops and give presentations throughout the event.

IIASA Acting Director General, Wolfgang Lutz, will receive the Science Prize of the Austrian Research Association for his outstanding scientific achievements and the scientific-political relevance and high topicality of his research. The event will take place in German.

Daniela Weber will participate in a webinar discussion on the state of healthy aging and prevention across Europe organized by the International Longevity Centre UK.

The ceremony looks back on the founding of the institute, highlighting its role as a bridge between the East and West, as well as the importance of Austria as a founding member and host country. The event will take place in German.

This science-policy meeting will provide a forum to discuss latest modelling research results on how to accelerate GHG emission cuts to achieve system-wide ambitious decarbonisation in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C.

Anne Goujon will present the results of a global survey on the drivers of global demographic change, launched in June 2023, at a workshop in Brussels organized by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).

Africa UniNet visited IIASA on 15 September 2023 to learn more about the institute and systems analysis as part of its Third General Assembly.

We bring together speakers from IIASA, the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies - SAPEA, and the North Africa Applied Systems Analysis Center - NAASAC to share their experiences on engaging in this space from a researcher, organizational, and policy perspective.

From October 18^th- 20^th 2023, NODES’ researchers Inian Moorthy and Gerid Hager will showcase the IIASA-led Urban ReLeaf project at the European Urban Resilience Forum in Cascais, Portugal. They will launch a Community of Practice to bring together public authorities, urban planners and other key stakeholders to design citizen-centric urban greening actions and address wider policy making processes in pursuit of urban climate resilience.  

The fifth IIASA National and Regional Member Organizations (NMOs/RMO) engagement workshop will take place on 17 and 18 October 2023 and is part of the activities of the Strategic Initiatives Program. The workshop will identify global and regional challenges with significant strategic impact for IIASA member organizations. The event provides an opportunity to shape the program's research agenda for the next round of proposals.

Climate impacts in one location that propagate to other locations through trade and value chains, development and security policies, and financial systems, may have disrupting effects similar to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war on Ukraine. These effects are not easily represented in traditional analysis frameworks and need to be embedded in the wider context of social vulnerability and climate change. The conference aims to bring together scientists across disciplines that work on approaches to better understand and respond/adapt to cross-border climate impacts and risks. The conference also seeks to identify knowledge gaps and directions for future research. Research presented in the conference will highlight what needs arise from a consideration of cross-border climate impacts, how to design research that is actionable for decision-making or how to improve the monitoring of risks.

Join us for this webinar series that aims to advance the knowledge about tipping elements, irreversibility, and abrupt changes in the Earth system. This installment will focus on ecological tipping points and resilience.
