With the climate crisis already heavily affecting lives and livelihoods across the globe, regions and communities, in addition to countries, are increasingly called upon to better plan for climate risks as well as to implement options that build resilience. SYRR in several EU funded projects is developing guidance for enhanced climate risk assessment as well as for efforts to build climate resilience in Europe.
The CLIMAAX project is developing an innovative, hybrid approach to assess present and future climate risks, thus responding to the EU Mission Adaptation by supporting regions and on their way towards Climate Adaptation and Resilience. SYRR has co-developed a climate risk assessment framework that is supported by a practical toolbox for risk analysis to quantify flood, drought, heat, fire, wind, and snow risk. Pilot applications in the region of Setúbal (Portugal), Catalunya, Zilina city (Slovakia), as well as regions in Finland and Latvia are being developed to test the approach. Complementing the risk assessment focus, the P2R project develops guidance to support regions in developing transformative resilience solutions that foster climate adaptation.
For both projects, calls are out (CLIMAAX call, P2R call) for regions and municipalities across Europe to apply for funding to implement the guidance provided by the project and get support through a help desk. With further roll-out and scaling starting mid-2024 it is foreseen that both projects will reach and inform about ~150 regions and municipalities in Europe.
