The Alvar Aalto Symposium is an international forum for discussion on contemporary architecture. It is a triennial event, first held in 1979, that gathers professionals from around the world to engage in current architectural topics. The aim is to stimulate critical discussion about the artistic, social, and technical challenges faced by contemporary architecture.

The 16th Alvar Aalto Symposium will be a hybrid event, onsite in Jyväskylä, Finland, and virtual for audiences around the world. It is organized by the Alvar Aalto Academy together with the City of Jyväskylä and several other partners. The 2-day program includes a seminar program, architectural excursions, exhibitions and various public events. Questions that will be addressed during the symposium include: What is the role of architecture and the designer amid environmental crises, catastrophes, and political upheaval? Can design make a difference, solve problems, and bring about radical change? and How much does architecture weigh when the future of the entire planet is in the balance?
