This installment of the Tipping points webinar series will explore how climate models can help scientists understand climate tipping points and the risks of abrupt, potentially hard-to-reverse changes in the Earth system, while highlighting recent modeling insights, scientific challenges, and what models can and cannot tell us about tipping point risks.

Climate tipping points could trigger abrupt and potentially hard-to-reverse changes in parts of the Earth system. But how can scientists investigate these processes using climate models, and how confident can we be in the results?

This webinar will introduce the Tipping Points Modelling Intercomparison Project (TIPMIP), an international effort to coordinate modeling experiments on tipping points, and examine how it connects to the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP), an international climate modeling project.

Speakers will share recent insights and experiences from climate modeling and discuss scientific challenges and how modeling can support a clearer understanding of tipping point risks.

The Tipping points discussion series supports efforts to increase consistency in the treatment of tipping elements in the scientific community, develop a research agenda, and design joint experiments and ideas for a Tipping Element Model Intercomparison Project (TipMip). It is a joint activity of the Analysis, Integration, and Modeling of the Earth System (AIMES) global research project of Future Earth, the Earth Commission Working Group 1 Earth and Human Systems Intercomparison Modelling Project (EHSMIP) under the Global Commons Alliance, and the Safe Landing Climates Light House Activity of World Climate Research Program (WCRP).

IIASA co-hosts the scientific secretariat of Working Group 1 of the Earth Commission and is one of the organizers of these events.
