The event, co-organized by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan (MOEJ), the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and IIASA, will showcase a collaborative research project on urban transformation. The project will lay the groundwork for the forthcoming special report on "Climate Change and Cities" which will be a valuable addition to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 7th assessment cycle. IIASA Director General John Schellnhuber and several IIASA experts will participate as speakers and panelists.

The IPCC will produce the 7th Assessment Report (AR7), scheduled for 2023-2028. Within this process, it has been decided to prepare a special report on 'Climate Change and Cities' in response to the growing interest in the impacts of climate change on cities and the challenges and opportunities for city-specific mitigation and adaptation.

As part of strengthening Japan's contribution to the IPCC 7th assessment cycle, MOEJ and IIASA launched a collaborative research project on urban transformation, with the aim of providing key findings for the special report on 'Climate Change and Cities'. This symposium aims to discuss how Japan can contribute to the IPCC 7th assessment cycle, including the launch of the report produced by this collaborative project.

Among the keynote speakers are:

  • IIASA Director General John Schellnhuber who will present on “IIASA and its Contribution to IPCC/AR7 and beyond”;
  • IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program Director Keywan Riahi will discuss the “IIASA-Japan Research Project on City Transformation”;
  • Diana Ürge-Vorsatz, member of the IIASA Science Advisory Committee and Vice Chair of IPCC/AR7, will present the “Roadmap for IPCC/AR7”; and
  • Masako Ogawa, Deputy Executive Director, MOEJ, will talk about “Japan’s Contribution to IPCC/AR7”.

Following the keynote speeches there will be a panel discussion, including:

  • Leila Niamir, IIASA researcher in the Energy, Climate, and Environment Program;
  • Debra Roberts, Co-Chair of IPCC/AR6 WGII;
  • Winston Chow, Co-Chair of IPCC/AR7 WGII;
  • Eric Zusman, Research Leader, Integrated Sustainability Centre, IGES; and
  • Masako Ogawa.

The event will take place in English with simultaneous translation provided in Japanese.

There will be an alumni gathering following the symposium.
