Education matters more than income to reduce premature adult mortality in India
IIASA researchers explored why mortality among adults of working age remains high in India alongside rapid economic growth, finding that education – at both individual and community levels – is more strongly associated with lower premature mortality than income or household wealth.

IIASA works with the Government of Uttar Pradesh, India, to develop a new clean air strategy
Working with the Government of Uttar Pradesh, India, and the World Bank, researchers from the IIASA Pollution Management Research Group helped develop a forward-looking clean air strategy for the Uttar Pradesh state of India, based on air quality levels, trends, and prominent pollution sources.

Rethinking the demographic race: what is the future economic potential of India and China?
In 2023, India surpassed China as the most populous country in the world, and is likely to retain this status for the remainder of this century. In a recent study, IIASA researchers explored whether India could also surpass China in terms of broader socio-economic potential, given the country’s rapid economic growth in recent decades.

Cleaning the air in South Asia: Why science and cooperation matter
IIASA researchers Pallav Purohit and Zbigniew Klimont examined the urgent challenge of air pollution in South Asia and the opportunities to address it through science-based policy and regional cooperation. In the run-up to the recent International Vienna Energy and Climate Forum, they drew on recent research and real-world examples to highlight how integrated approaches to energy, climate, and air quality can deliver cleaner air, improved health, and more resilient economies for nearly one billion people.
