A SEP Orchestration Working Group has formally commenced under the ICONICS steering committee.

The SEP is pleased to call for papers to our Special Issue on “Socioeconomic futures frameworks for motivating actions for sustainability” in the journal Futures.

The SEP is envisaged as a re-evaluation of the architecture of the SSPs, guided by a community-based process. A number of activities are underway for 2026, and the scientific community is asked to provide critical input.

Bridging climate science and health modeling

In an era of information overload and rapidly evolving media landscapes, science journalism plays a crucial role in helping audiences understand complex global challenges. IIASA is pleased to join ISTA and the Complexity Science Hub for a panel discussion exploring how journalists and communicators can uphold accuracy, context, and trust in science reporting.

Researchers from the Systemic Risk and Resilience (SYRR) Research Group within IIASA’s Advancing Systems Analysis (ASA) Program will participate in the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance (ZCRA) Global Learning Event 2026, taking place from 1–3 June 2026 at the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom.

BLOOM is an interdisciplinary One Health research project that aims to better understand the impact of conservation- and land use policies on zoonotic disease spillover (particularly Ebola Virus Disease) in Sierra Leone. By analyzing the intersection of land-use systems and policy frameworks, we aim to identify conservation-based strategies that could reduce the risk of future outbreaks. Our research integrates stakeholder dynamics, policy frameworks, and land-use systems to strengthen health and conservation outcomes.

EU Green Week 2026 Partner Event: Climate Risks and Biodiversity for European Resilience and a Nature-Positive Economy

The SYRR (ASA) group of IIASA will participate at the Annual Conference of the Society for Risk Analysis Europe Advancing Risk Science for a Safer and Fairer Future.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) methods are becoming increasingly important in both science and society. In climate science - where complex biophysical and societal processes interact across diverse temporal and spatial scales, and datasets are often large, heterogenous and incomplete - AI and ML methods offer new powerful solutions.

IIASA Deputy Director General, Karen Lips, will participate in two international events focused on strengthening the role of systems approaches, open science, and research impact in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The events are connected with the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC), which will take place in in Bangkok, Thailand, from 18 to 22 May 2026.

Tipping points in the Earth system are often portrayed as ominous, abrupt shifts that could significantly alter life on Earth. While this reflects the seriousness of the science, the framing can also create confusion and discourage action. This webinar will explore how climate tipping points are communicated, with a focus on making these complex scientific concepts accessible and meaningful for a range of audiences, including policymakers, stakeholders, and the wider public.
