IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program Director, Keywan Riahi, will deliver a public lecture at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the National Member Organization representing Austria at IIASA, as part of their Mathematical and Natural Sciences Division's session.
In his talk Digitalization and AI within planetary boundaries, Riahi will examine how digital technologies and artificial intelligence can support the transition to a sustainable future. Drawing on the latest research, he will show that digital applications in mobility, buildings, and services have a far greater impact on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions than data centers alone.
The lecture will explore how climate-oriented digitalization can reduce the costs of transformation, accelerate decarbonization, and strengthen the resilience of energy systems. At the same time, Riahi will highlight the risks of poorly directed digitalization, including rebound effects, rising emissions, and delays in achieving climate targets.
The event will address the critical role of governance in ensuring that digital transformation contributes to sustainability goals and remains within planetary boundaries.
