On Tuesday, 10 November, at 11:30 (Türkiye time), SPARCCLE and its sister projects ACCREU and CROSSEU will host a side event entitled “Impacts of Climate Overshoot and the Case for Ambitious Action” at the COP31 Cryosphere Pavilion in Antalya, Türkiye.
The session will explore emerging evidence on the socioeconomic costs of climate overshoot across regions and sectors. It will highlight how conventional, average-based risk assessments can understate the impacts of compound and extreme events, obscuring the scale and urgency of the challenges ahead.
Drawing on complementary research and perspectives from the three projects, the discussion will address advances in socioeconomic risk assessment, including storyline and stress-test scenarios, climate risk assessment and adaptation for Alpine and coastal regions, and the inequalities and vulnerabilities associated with climate extremes and overshoot.
The event will be moderated by Inga Menke, SPARCCLE researcher at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA). Five researchers representing the three projects will contribute to the discussion, each bringing perspectives from their respective research.
Programme and Speakers
Welcome and Introduction to SPARCCLE, ACCREU and CROSSEU
11:30-11:35 | Inga Menke (IIASA, SPARCCLE, in person)
Research Contributions
- 11:35-11:45 | Yann Quilcaille (ETH Zurich, SPARCCLE, in person) will present SPARCCLE's work on stress-test scenarios and discuss 3°C warming impacts in a 1.5°C world, drawing on outputs from MESMER and CLIMADA.
- 11:45-11:55 | Rosanne Martyr (Climate Analytics, SPARCCLE, in person) will highlight SPARCCLE's research on climate risks and adaptation, demonstrating the project's work in this area.
- 11:55-12:05 | Francesco Bosello (CMCC, ACCREU, online) will share findings from ACCREU on the costs of adaptation, with a focus on the macroeconomic dimensions of climate adaptation.
- 12:05-12:15 | Dana Micu (Meteo Romania, CROSSEU, online) and Shreya Some (Technical University of Denmark (DTU), CROSSEU, online) will present research on cryosphere impacts, drawing on a CROSSEU case study of the Carpathian Mountains.
Moderated Panel Discussion and Q&A
12:15-12:30 | Inga Menke (IIASA, SPARCCLE, in person)
The Cryosphere Pavilion will be held in the Blue Zone and take place in coordination with Ambition on Melting Ice (AMI) High-level Group Co-chair Iceland.
About the projects: SPARCCLE, ACCREU and CROSSEU are Horizon Europe funded research projects dedicated to understanding the socioeconomic risks of climate change in Europe. Running between 2023 and 2027, they are developing novel insights on climate risk and adaptation in Europe.
