IIASA Deputy Director General, Karen Lips, will participate in two international events focused on strengthening the role of systems approaches, open science, and research impact in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The events are connected with the 2026 Annual Meeting of the Global Research Council (GRC), which will take place in in Bangkok, Thailand, from 18 to 22 May 2026.

Co-hosted by Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), the 2026 GRC Annual Meeting meeting will bring together leaders of research funding organizations from around the world to discuss the themes of open science and research for sustainable communities. The GRC is a global virtual organization composed of heads of science and engineering funding agencies dedicated to improving cooperation, sharing best practices, and strengthening international research collaboration.

On 18 May 2026, Lips will deliver the keynote address at a GRC side event titled “Harnessing Systems Thinking, Open Science, and Research Metrics to Maximize SDG Impact: Advancing Sustainable and Resilient Communities”. The session will bring together research funders and global partners to explore how funding agencies can strengthen sustainable development outcomes through more integrated, transparent, and evidence-informed approaches.

The event is designed as a strategic and interactive exchange focused on practical insights for research councils, funding agencies, and the broader research ecosystem. Lips’ keynote will serve as the strategic framing intervention for the session, helping to connect systems approaches, open science, and SDG impact measurement as mutually reinforcing dimensions for advancing sustainable and resilient communities. Her address will highlight why complex sustainability challenges require integrated and systems-informed approaches rather than siloed funding responses. It will also explore how systems thinking and integrated analysis can help funders better understand interdependencies, trade-offs, and leverage points across the SDGs, while supporting more effective program design, evaluation, and long-term investment strategies. She will emphasize the importance of inclusive and equitable open science in strengthening collaboration, participation, transparency, and knowledge accessibility, as well as the growing relevance of SDG-aligned impact metrics and evidence-informed approaches for accountability and strategic decision-making. In line with the IIASA mission, Lips will also address the role of international collaboration, shared infrastructures, and cross-regional learning in building a stronger global research ecosystem.

The side event program includes case study presentations and an interactive panel discussion, in which Lips will also participate alongside representatives from research and funding organizations across Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and Asia, including South Africa’s National Research Foundation, the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation of Ghana, the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology, the Lebanon National Council for Scientific Research, and the Department of Science and Technology of the Philippines.

SDGs Researchers Workshop

Ahead of the GRC side event, Lips will also deliver a keynote address at an SDGs Researchers Workshop on Sunday, 17 May 2026. The workshop will convene researchers, funders, policymakers, and academic leaders to showcase collaborative projects and strengthen dialogue around research impact, implementation, ethics, and innovation in support of the SDGs.

This workshop builds on the GRC SDG Funding Pilot Call administered by South Africa’s National Research Foundation, which brought together 11 participating GRC organizations and supported 12 collaborative research projects aimed at accelerating progress toward the SDGs through research and innovation outcomes.

Workshop participants will engage in thematic research presentations, poster sessions, and interactive discussions focused on translating research into societal impact, strengthening collaboration, and exploring practical pathways for advancing the SDGs across different regional and policy contexts. Discussions will also address broader questions related to systems approaches, stakeholder engagement, and the narratives shaping sustainable development pathways.

Lips’ participation in both events reflects IIASA’s continued commitment to advancing international scientific cooperation and systems-based approaches to addressing interconnected global challenges and supporting evidence-informed pathways toward sustainable development.
