The IIASA Tools for Raising and UnderStanding Trust in systems science through citizen engagement (TRUST) Strategic Initiative is organizing a 1.5 days' workshop at IIASA. The workshop will take place on 30 November and 1 December 2023 and is part of the activities of the Strategic Initiatives Program.  

This is the eleventh installment of the IIASA Voices webinar series with IIASA researchers Juliette Martin and JoAnne Linnerooth-Bayer. The session will be moderated by Alberto Fresolone (video available).

Join us for this webinar series that aims to advance the knowledge about tipping elements, irreversibility, and abrupt changes in the Earth system. This installment will look into why methane is rising, how sources and sinks are changing, and what the risk from hydrates is.

The most recent instalment of the IIASA Connect Coffee Talk series brought together the institute’s Communications Manager Ansa Heyl, the Head of Communications for the Scientific Advice Mechanism to the European Commission (SAPEA) Toby Wardman, and a participant in the North Africa Applied Systems Analysis Center (NAASAC) Mai Mostafa Awad to discuss their experiences in communicating science to inform policy.

A workshop on the water-energy-land nexus jointly organized by IIASA and the World Resources Institute in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, brought together 30 researchers and practitioners from 14 African countries to deliberate on equitable development in rural Africa.

IIASA researchers are contributing to the Horizon Europe funded PARATUS project, which aims to promote disaster preparedness and resilience by co-developing stakeholder support tools for managing the systemic risk of compounding disasters.

IIASA researchers are collaborating on a new Horizon Europe project, which will use artificial intelligence to help farmers and land managers analyze their soil health without the need for a laboratory.

Former Director at the European Commission, Anastassios Haniotis, joined IIASA as a senior guest research scholar in the Integrated Biosphere Futures Research Group earlier this year. Florian Kraxner and Andrey Krasovskiy participated in the workshop "Drivers of Climate Risks in Europe: Harmonizing Research on Impact Attribution of Past Events," which took place on Friday, September 22, 2023, at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) in Potsdam, Germany.

The ceremony looks back on the founding of the institute, highlighting its role as a bridge between the East and West, as well as the importance of Austria as a founding member and host country. The event will take place in German.

Deteriorating water quality poses major threats to human health, economic development, and local ecosystems in Uganda. The Ugandan government is working with international scientists to build up knowledge and enhance institutional capacity for better water quality management, as well as improve the understanding of water quality status in the country. 

Managing land for agriculture has shaped civilization, but it has also led to biodiversity decline and other problems that today threaten the future of humanity. The EU Horizon 2020 FRAMEwork project is supporting a transition to biodiversity sensitive farming by uniting farmer clusters and citizen observatories to protect sensitive ecosystems while ensuring food security.

We bring together speakers from IIASA, the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies - SAPEA, and the North Africa Applied Systems Analysis Center - NAASAC to share their experiences on engaging in this space from a researcher, organizational, and policy perspective.

The fifth IIASA National and Regional Member Organizations (NMOs/RMO) engagement workshop will take place on 17 and 18 October 2023 and is part of the activities of the Strategic Initiatives Program. The workshop will identify global and regional challenges with significant strategic impact for IIASA member organizations. The event provides an opportunity to shape the program's research agenda for the next round of proposals.
