The ceremony looks back on the founding of the institute, highlighting its role as a bridge between the East and West, as well as the importance of Austria as a founding member and host country. The event will take place in German.

As the IIASA host country, Austria has always been a close partner, and has been providing a home to the institute in Laxenburg since its founding in 1972. The Austrian Academy of Sciences has been a National Member Organization (NMO) since 1973.

The anniversary ceremony serves a dual purpose: Firstly, it will reflect on the institute's origins, underlining its founding principles as a vital bridge between East and West, along with its significance for Austria and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Additionally, the event will shed light on the challenges posed by an ever-evolving world, highlighting IIASA's dynamic role in this transformation. The path forward is concisely outlined in the newly released IIASA Flagship Report.

Several IIASA experts will participate and share their insights:

  • Nebojsa Nakicenovic, Distinguished Emeritus Research Scholar, will discuss fifty years of energy, technology, and climate research at IIASA, and future opportunities and challenges;
  • Wolfgang Lutz, Acting Director General, will present the IIASA Flagship Report “Systems Analysis for Sustainable Wellbeing”; and
  • Barbara Kreissler, Head of Communications and External Relations, will address the role of Austria in international science diplomacy.
