Amazon understory forests show short-term boost in CO₂ uptake – but this comes at a cost

Tropical forests are one of the planet's most important carbon sinks – often also called "the lungs of the Earth". But their future in a high-CO₂ world remains uncertain. IIASA researchers contributed to a new study, which suggests even small understory trees in the Amazon may initially buffer climate change more strongly. Their long-term capacity to store carbon could, however, be restricted by nutrient availability, highlighting the vulnerability of these ecosystems under future climate conditions.

Building resilience to floods and heatwaves for maternal and child healthcare

What happens to essential maternal and child healthcare when floods or extreme heat make it harder for families to reach clinics and for health workers to deliver services? IIASA Health, Aging, and Health Systems Research Group Leader, Josephine Borghi, shares perspectives from the REACH project, which is exploring emerging risks and promising strategies to build more climate-resilient health systems.

Annual Report 2024: Strategic Initiatives Highlights

The Strategic Initiatives Program plays an important role in advancing initiatives through strong engagement with the Institute’s member organizations while delivering groundbreaking research. In 2024, the program launched a Call for Expressions of Interest, informed by insights from the Member Organizations Engagement Workshop held in October 2023. Following rigorous evaluation, two initiatives were selected for funding: Biodiversity and Land-use Objectives for Optimal Management (bloom) and Wildfires and Climate Change in the Boreal Zone (Fire&Ice).
