A workshop on the water-energy-land nexus jointly organized by IIASA and the World Resources Institute in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, brought together 30 researchers and practitioners from 14 African countries to deliberate on equitable development in rural Africa.

Using the journey of chocolate, from the sun-drenched cocoa plantations to the sweet bars that we all know and love, IIASA researchers Ali Kharrazi and Zuelclady Araujo Gutierrez recently guided a group of young learners through the practical applications of systems thinking and life-cycle analysis in our everyday lives.

This meeting will focus on synthesizing and integrating the information obtained form all technical work packages, including the results of measurements and modelling. The synthesis will also take into account the results from previous research and from other ongoing projects.

The 5th European Citizen Science Association (ECSA) conference will take place in Vienna, Austria, from 3 - 6 April 2024. This is one of the leading citizen science events in Europe, where people from multiple backgrounds and disciplines will discuss citizen science and explore its potential for addressing societal and environmental issues. Colleagues from the Novel Data Ecosystem for Sustainability (NODES) Research Group are involved in ECSA and will run workshops and give presentations throughout the event.

IIASA researchers are collaborating on a new Horizon Europe project, which will use artificial intelligence to help farmers and land managers analyze their soil health without the need for a laboratory.
