IIASA Director General John Schellnhuber will be one of the key speakers at the 16th Alvar Aalto Symposium in Jyväskylä, Finland. The theme of this year's event is, The weight of architecture during the era of extremes. The event takes place over two days under three overarching topics, with presentations on Environment, Resources, and Architecture. Schellnhuber's talk will take place on Thursday, 22 August from 14:00-14:30 as part of the Environment topic.

As environmental, technological, and societal change join forces to disrupt human and planetary health, the world must get better at tracking and responding to a host of emerging challenges, according to a new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the International Science Council (ISC).

Recently graduated PhD students wishing to develop skills, experience and expertise in systems analysis, and in international and interdisciplinary research are invited to apply for a 1-2 years postdoctoral fellowship within the IIASA-Archimedes Postdoctoral Program. The Fellowship is open to Israeli citizens that completed their PhD in any university in Israel or abroad or to any applicant (any citizenship) that graduated with PhD from an Israeli University. We are especially looking for highly qualified early-career researchers who received their PhD no more than five years before the appointment started.

The first Vienna Climate Biennale took place from April to July. CircEUlar was one of the scientific partners of the Biennale, contributing insights on the potential of circular economy strategies to combat climate change. Project coordinators Marina Jovanovic and Volker Krey reflect on the 100-day festival and the unique collaboration between science and art.

Kai Kornhuber, Senior Research Scholar in the Integrated Climate Impacts Research Group of the IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program, will give a talk titled, Understanding the dynamics of record breaking, concurrent, and sequential extremes at the upcoming Australian Academy of Science Elizabeth and Frederick White Research Conference on Atmospheric Dynamics in Melbourne, Australia.

Under the leadership of the Equity and Justice Research Group of the IIASA Population and Just Societies Program, researchers from across the Institute have spent the past three years working towards the first iteration of the IIASA Justice Framework – a descriptive guideline for science and policy. The framework is now available on the IIASA website and as an IIASA working paper.

IIASA researchers contributed to a project of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), working in partnership with scientists from other renowned institutions, to help the government of Indonesia advance actionable agrifood systems policies based on rigorous scientific assessment.

A novel machine learning framework developed by IIASA researchers to estimate global rooftop area growth from 2020 to 2050 can aid in planning sustainable energy systems, urban development, and climate change mitigation, and has potential for significant benefits in emerging economies.

Co-organized by IIASA, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, this hybrid event marks the Austrian launch of the Human Development Report 2023-2024 "Breaking the gridlock: Reimagining cooperation in a polarized world" with a keynote presentation by Pedro Conceicao, Director of the UNDP Human Development Report Office, followed by flash talks and a panel discussion focusing on human agency as a foundation for sustainable development.

IIASA is partnering with the World Bank to host a joint session at the US National Academies (NASEM) Climate Crossroads 2024 summit scheduled for 16-17 July in Washington, DC. The session with the title, The need of science for consistency in the international and national climate policy processes, will take place on 17 July at 13:30-14:45pm (ET).
