A person using digital communication leaves behind a trail of information on their activities, their interactions, and even some about who they are. Social media has become quintessential to the modern lives of billions of people which means that billions of trails are recorded on social media and communications platforms. This data has come to be a treasure trove of aggregated information which scientists can use to decipher the most unique trends and behaviors on a societal level. As part of her ongoing research at ASA, Elena Rovenskaya presented on the significance of social media as a source of information for science and its usefulness in understanding complex systems behaviors.

GRANULAR is a project that will last for four years, involving different disciplines and countries, with the aim of creating new datasets, tools, and methods to better understand rural areas. By doing this, we hope to gain new insights into the unique characteristics, dynamics, and drivers of change in rural areas. Using this newly generated and collected knowledge, we aim to help those involved in rural development to design place-based policies that are specifically tailored to the needs of each individual area. Ultimately, GRANULAR hopes to support rural actors in their efforts to promote sustainable territorial development.

This talk will present the results from the ADAPT-UHI project, funded by the Austrian Climate Research Program, in which urban climate modelling was used to assess different climate adaptation and mitigation options in three small- to medium-sized cities in Austria: Klagenfurt, Mödling and Salzburg including a social cost benefit analysis. Other outputs included tailored recommendations for urban planning and an Urban Heat Island Risk map for Austria. More recently, the Urban ReLeaf project, funded by Horizon Europe, aims to involve citizen science and different types of sensors in urban greening solutions across six cities in Europe. Although the project only started at the beginning of 2023, a brief overview of the goals and current activities will be highlighted. The talk will last around 45 minutes followed by questions and a discussion for another 45 minutes.
