We bring together speakers from IIASA, the Science Advice for Policy by European Academies - SAPEA, and the North Africa Applied Systems Analysis Center - NAASAC to share their experiences on engaging in this space from a researcher, organizational, and policy perspective.

From October 18^th- 20^th 2023, NODES’ researchers Inian Moorthy and Gerid Hager will showcase the IIASA-led Urban ReLeaf project at the European Urban Resilience Forum in Cascais, Portugal. They will launch a Community of Practice to bring together public authorities, urban planners and other key stakeholders to design citizen-centric urban greening actions and address wider policy making processes in pursuit of urban climate resilience.  

The fifth IIASA National and Regional Member Organizations (NMOs/RMO) engagement workshop will take place on 17 and 18 October 2023 and is part of the activities of the Strategic Initiatives Program. The workshop will identify global and regional challenges with significant strategic impact for IIASA member organizations. The event provides an opportunity to shape the program's research agenda for the next round of proposals.

Climate impacts in one location that propagate to other locations through trade and value chains, development and security policies, and financial systems, may have disrupting effects similar to the COVID-19 pandemic and the war on Ukraine. These effects are not easily represented in traditional analysis frameworks and need to be embedded in the wider context of social vulnerability and climate change. The conference aims to bring together scientists across disciplines that work on approaches to better understand and respond/adapt to cross-border climate impacts and risks. The conference also seeks to identify knowledge gaps and directions for future research. Research presented in the conference will highlight what needs arise from a consideration of cross-border climate impacts, how to design research that is actionable for decision-making or how to improve the monitoring of risks.

Due to limited availability and strong interest in the Tipping Points Modelling Intercomparison Project (TIPMIP) “Towards TIPMIP” WE Heraeus Foundation seminar in November, we are pleased to announce an additional community-wide, online-only event: TIPMIP for All, to be held on 9 October 2023 from 16:00-18:00 CET.

Join us for this webinar series that aims to advance the knowledge about tipping elements, irreversibility, and abrupt changes in the Earth system. This installment will focus on ecological tipping points and resilience.

On 18 September 2023, IIASA will host a meeting of its National Member Organizations (NMOs) and Regional Member Organization (RMO) Secretaries. This gathering will unite representatives from diverse countries to discuss and strengthen their partnerships with IIASA.

The International Data Week, which will take place on 23–26 October 2023, will bring together a global community of data scientists and data stewards; researchers from all domains; data, interoperability and informatics experts from all fields; industry leaders, entrepreneurs and policymakers. Dilek Fraisl and Ian McCallum from the Novel Data Ecosystems for Sustainability will be participating.

A team of researchers from IIASA’s Systemic Risk and Resilience (Advancing Systems Analysis Program) is primed to present their work at the highly anticipated 7th "Adaptation Futures" conference at the Palais des congrès de Montréal in Canada this October. Adaptation Futures is the premier international conference devoted entirely to climate change adaptation. It brings together researchers, policymakers, practitioners, industry representatives, and communicators to present their work in adaptation, learn from others, and establish networks. The conference provides a vibrant platform for IIASA researchers to spotlight their cutting-edge work on managing systemic risks and increasing resilience against climate impacts.  

IIASA is co-convening a session during the ninth Science Summit around the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA78) that will take place on 12-29 September 2023, focusing on "Developing Equitable Partnerships for Open Science and Innovation in the era of AI".  In addition, IIASA research scholar Dilek Fraisl will participate as a speaker in another session, titled “Citizen Science for Digital Health and AI Research”.

IIASA researchers will present their work at the “Lower Austria Research Festival 2023 - Forschungsfest Niederösterreich”, organized by the Section of Science and Research of the Province of Lower Austria.

The International Boreal Forest Research Association will bring together researchers, managers, policymakers, and members from civil society for its bi-annual conference, focusing on the changing boreal biome. It will be hosted by The Natural Resources Institute of Finland from 28 - 31 August 2023 in Helsinki, Finland.

Bas van Ruijven will represent the ENGAGE consortium at the upcoming European Climate and Energy Modelling Platform (ECEMP). His keynote will cover the Feasible scenarios to increase climate ambition.  

IIASA Flagship Report launch is co-sponsored by the Permanent Missions of Austria and South Africa to the UN and supported by the Department of Science and Technology of South Africa. This official UN event illuminated essential facets of this landmark publication, which has received a foreword contribution from Alexander Van der Bellen, Federal President of the Republic of Austria.

From 29 August to 1 September 2023, The European Association of Agricultural Economists (EAAE) will hold its 17th congress, which serves as a dynamic platform for convening scholars, practitioners, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss the pressing issues in agriculture and food sectors. Setting the tone for the discussion, IIASA researchers will organize a pre-congress workshop titled “Towards New Baseline Scenarios in Ex-Ante Modelling of Land-Use and Management.”

IIASA voices webinar with IIASA researchers Katya Perez Guzman, Samir K.C., and Sylvia Tramberend is now online. Moderated by IIASA Capacity Development and Academic Training Unit Dean, Fabian Wagner, this episode explores the work of researchers in building capacity in systems analysis around the world. 

The data collected by citizen science projects increasingly has a geographic dimension, which makes them a growing source of valuable spatial information. To explore this topic in more detail, Linda See will be giving a keynote entitled ‘Citizen Science as a Key Source of Geographic Information’ at the 12^th International Conference on Geographic Information Science (GIScience 2023).

The Energy Demand changes Induced by Technological and Social innovations (EDITS) network holds its Annual Conference in Lisbon, Portugal between 6 and 10 November 2023 to further the interdisciplinary dialogue in conceptualizing, analyzing, policy making, and modeling of energy demand and its interlinkages to climate change mitigation and the SDGs.

In the framework of the IIASA 50^th Anniversary, the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and IIASA are co-hosting a hybrid event to celebrate 20 years of China’s participation in IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP) on 6-7 September 2023 (Beijing, China and online).
