The International Boreal Forest Research Association will bring together researchers, managers, policymakers, and members from civil society for its bi-annual conference, focusing on the changing boreal biome. It will be hosted by The Natural Resources Institute of Finland from 28 - 31 August 2023 in Helsinki, Finland.

The boreal forest, the Earth's second largest terrestrial biome, is experiencing rapid transformations due to changing climates, leading to increased disturbances like wildfires and insect outbreaks. These changes are not only impacting the ecosystem but also the livelihoods of those reliant on its resources.

With this year’s theme of Climate resilient and sustainable forest management, the conference aims to explore ways to address the challenges caused by these changes.Through a diverse program, the conference will explore the current scientific understanding of the vulnerability and resilience of the boreal biome to climate change, associated emerging trajectories, and socio-economic implications. In addition to examining new research, the conference will highlight policy developments necessary to ensure efficient adaptation and mitigation strategies for climate change in the boreal region.

The conference offers a platform for researchers, policymakers, and stakeholders to collectively address the complex challenges posed by changing climates. The involvement of researchers from the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) highlights their commitment to fostering cooperative initiatives to attain sustainable forest management in response to evolving climatic conditions.

IIASA is participating with a significant delegation of researchers from BNR program: Florian Kraxner, President of IBFRA, will share his invaluable insights in the conference's knowledge exchange sessions to motivate sustainability transformations in forest management practices. In addition to participating in knowledge exchange sessions, Florian Kraxner will also deliver the concluding words of the IBFRA 2023 conference. Scientific presentations will also be provided by Fulvio Di Fulvio, Andrey Lessa Derci Augustynczik, Mykola Gusti and Pekka Lauri from IBF and Anatoly Shvidenko (member of IBFRA Steering Group), Dmitry ShchepashchenkoHyungwoo Lim and Shelby Corning from AFE.
