Building momentum for regional science diplomacy
An IIASA delegation visited Egypt from 11–12 December 2025 including Deputy Director General Karen Lips and IIASA Water Security Research Group Leader, Taher Kahil, who participated in the Innovation Research Commercialization Expo (IRC 2025) and met with representatives of Egypt’s Institute of National Planning.

Together for water: Science diplomacy to advance regional cooperation in MENA
IIASA recently hosted an exploratory workshop titled, Together for water: Fostering collaboration in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). The two-day event brought together around 50 representatives from international organizations, civil society organizations, research institutions, and diplomatic missions to explore new pathways for transboundary collaboration on water challenges across the region.

What if we centered justice in climate risk management and adaptation research and practice?
With intensifying climate-related risks deepening existing injustices across and within countries, it is paramount to center justice considerations in climate risk management research and practice. Earlier in December, around 50 participants worked intensely on this topic at a highly interactive three-day conference at IIASA to exchange expertise and develop concrete ideas and next steps.

In a world where sustainable development and climate change solutions demand urgent action, ensuring that policies are informed by solid evidence is essential. The North Africa Applied Systems Analysis Centre (NAASAC) in Egypt has made this its mission, aiming to build a systemic culture of applied systems analysis for evidence-based policy development.
