World Water Day held annually on 22 March, celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Water and sanitation for all by 2030.

Nadejda Komendantova from the Cooperation and Transformative Governance group is invited to provide an opening keynote presentation at the VIII International Workshop on Critical Infrastructures in the Digital World. The aim of the workshop is to discuss theoretical and methodological issues of development and integration of intelligent, agent-based and cloud computing for contingency management in critical infrastructures as well as to talk about Situational Awareness, Semiotics, Visual Analytics, Semantic Modeling and Cognitive Graphics and their applications in critical infrastructures.

IIASA Director General Albert van Jaarsveld spoke at the Using Science for/in Diplomacy for Addressing Global Challenges (S4D4C) project final networking meeting “Addressing Global Challenges Together: the Role of Science Diplomacy”.

She will present her perspective on the role that systems analysis can play in supporting the digital transformation.

Dmitry Erokhin is invited to speak on the determinants of Chinese outward foreign direct investment in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries with the special focus on the institutional environment of the host countries at the International Workshop “China's Belt and Road Initiative: curse or blessing for democracy in Eurasia?”. 

IIASA Director General Albert van Jaarsveld spoke at the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) workshop: “Science Diplomacy to Promote and Strengthen Basic Research and International Cooperation”.

World Population and Just Societies Program Director Raya Muttarak will talk on 9 April at the webinar on Population, Food and the Environment co-organized by the International Union for the Scientific Study of Population (IUSSP) and Population Association of America (PAA).

The INQUIMUS workshop has been postponed to Winter 2021. IIASA’s Population and Just Societies Program together with the Advanced Systems Analysis Program will host the INQUIMUS workshop series entitled Risk management and Loss & Damage: What are suitable approaches for assessing climate-related (residual) risks?". The workshop will focus on the pressing issue of climate-related risks that may go beyond social and physical limits for adaptation.

Scientists inform policy makers about different aspects of the pandemic: risks and opportunities, lessons to be learned and pitfalls to be avoided. 

IIASA researcher Alexia Fürnkranz-Prskawetz and IIASA alumnus Verena Winiwarter will speak at this year’s Joint Academy Day between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada. Discussion will focus on global challenges such as food security, environmental change, poverty, and sustainable responses to Covid-19.

Nadejda Komendantova from the Advancing Systems Analysis Program is invited to speak at the Stakeholders' Consultation organized by UNECE and UNESCO on Innovation for Sustainable Development in Uzbekistan. Her talk is dedicated to innovation policy and risk perceptions from various stakeholders. These risk perceptions are influencing the intention of the stakeholders to lean towards innovation while reflecting on expectations of premiums for risk, delaying deployment of innovation, and increasing the volume of required investment. The talk also contains examples of de-risking policies and risk mitigation measures. 

The digital ALPTREES conference displays a platform for citizens, experts, young adults, and stakeholders to share their experiences and views on non-native trees and climate change in the Alpine region, as well as other related topics for oral or poster presentations and workshops.

Elena Rovenskaya is invited to speak on "Emerging trade routes between Europe and Asia" at the Round Table “Transport and Logistics” of the Northern Dimension Forum. The Forum is organized by the Northern Dimension Business Council in cooperation with the Association of European Businesses and the Moscow Management School Skolkovo and attracts more than 250 participants representing Russian and European key actors in the Northern Dimension area. It focuses on the Northern Dimension Business’s response to the COVID-19 challenge. The keynote speeches address economic forecasts, and safety measures as well as support and aid programs.

Elena Rovenskaya is invited to speak at the Consultations on the next steps in the operationalization of Euro-Asian transport corridors. These consultations are co-organized by the Sustainable Transport Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) and the Office of the Co-ordinator of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Economic and Environmental Activities / Secretariat with the support of the Freight Division of the International Union of Railways.

IIASA is organizing a panel discussion at the 2021 virtual American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting. Drawing on the outcomes of the IIASA-ISC Consultative Science Platform, international experts will discuss the impact of the pandemic on food systems, the recovery process from the 2020 crisis and how to better respond to disasters in the future.

The first workshop of the Foresight Exercise is organized in the framework of the “Emerging trade routes between Europe and Asia” scenario building project. The aim of the first workshop is to discuss the key factors that would impact shipping in the Arctic in the next 30 years and their interlinkages. This workshop consists of two virtual meetings.
