IIASA has collaborated with UNICEF to provide advanced data analysis and projections on demographic trends for the 2024 State of the World's Children Report.

A high-level delegation from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) visited IIASA for the second meeting of the IIASA-OECD Task Force focusing on systems thinking, anticipation, and resilience.

The aim of the workshop is to bring together specialists in the theory and applications of models on resilience and disruptive change and to continue the discussion initiated at the first workshop in 2022 and during the bi-yearly seminars on this topic. The workshop includes theoretical and applied environmental economic models on climate change, tipping points, resource management, as well as theoretical mathematical contributions.

This unique event brings together global thought leaders to explore how the concept of universal fraternity can address today’s interconnected crises—from environmental degradation to socio-political fragmentation.

The Urban Futures Hub is pleased to announce the second installment of its Urban Futures Series. Join us for an insightful discussion featuring distinguished speakers Debra Roberts and Şiir Kılkış about the process leading to the scoping, outline agreement, and essential expectations related to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report on Climate Change and Cities. The session will be moderated by Leila Niamir.

On Monday, 27 January, IIASA Deputy Director General, Karen Lips, will be one of the speakers at a parallel session on the changing context for science diplomacy during the The Muscat Global Knowledge Dialogue, which takes place from 26–28 January in Muskat, Oman. This segment of the International Science Council (ISC) General Assembly focuses on science and is open to a wider public. Following this event, she will represent IIASA at the Third ISC General Assembly on 29 and 30 January, which is the premier occasion for ISC members and affiliated bodies, fellows, and partners from all domains of science and regions of the world to meet for cross-disciplinary, strategic discussions on challenges and priorities for international cooperation in science.  

On 23 January 2025, IIASA was honored to receive a high-level delegation from Greece, visiting to learn about the institute’s research on wildfires, urban planning, wind and solar energy, as well as to explore opportunities for future collaboration.

The RIECS project, which starts IIASA and partners on a journey towards a Pan-European ‘Research Infrastructure for Excellent Citizen Science’, is an exciting new project that started on 1 January 2025. Led by Fundación Ibercivis and the European Citizen Science Association (ECSA), the Kickoff meeting will bring together 13 partners to discuss the conceptual design of this new infrastructure.

From 3rd to 4th December 2024, the SPARCCLE consortium hosted a workshop in Brussels, bringing together external stakeholders and EU policymakers, including representatives from CINEA, DG ENER, and DG HERA. This collaborative event provided a platform for feedback on EU adaptation and mitigation policy analysis. It also marked the beginning of SPARCCLE’s stress test co-development process, allowing participants to contribute valuable input toward the design of the SPARCCLE climate stress test scenarios.

On October 25th, 2024, EM Research Group leader Sebastian Poledna participated in an international workshop in South Korea to promote Agent-based Modelling (ABM) as a tool for economic projections. Dr. Poledna delivered a keynote speech on "Economic forecasting with an Agent-based Model". The event was attended by other organizations such as OECD, IITP and WIFO, as well as several Korean universities, to name a few, and was co-hosted and funded by the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). The objective of the multidisciplinary convergence workshop was to explore innovative solutions in the digital age for data- and evidence-based national policy, using concepts and methods such as agent-based modeling, AI-driven approaches, and methods from complex systems science. 

On Monday and Tuesday this week, IIASA hosted two classes from the Wiedner Gymnasium high-school for a half-day workshop to explore systems thinking through the life cycle analysis of a chocolate bar.  The students were encouraged to think about the complexity of the natural and social world they live in - this is one of the key objectives of the IIASA School Visits Initiative. The interactive workshops are designed to help students understand the broader implications of their choices and actions and equip them with valuable problem-solving skills.  

The Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), Manuel Otero, recently visited IIASA to discuss opportunities for future collaboration.

Join CLIMAAX’s second Webstival: From Insights to Action, Advancing Climate Resilience! As the challenges of climate change become increasingly severe, building regional resilience is more important than ever. The CLIMAAX project, where the SYRR group co-developed a framework and toolbox for Climate Risk Assessment, supports 60 regions in assessing their climate risks, thus helping them to better understand, prepare for, and manage these risks and opportunities. The project provides local and regional administrative units with access to climate risk profiles, improved early warning systems, and guidance for developing comprehensive risk management plans.

The G4DR project aims to enhance water security and resilience in Africa by unlocking the potential of sustainable groundwater development and protection.
