The ClimMigSEE project, funded by Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) aims to enhance the understanding of how climate change impacts human mobility patterns in South-Eastern Europe.

As one of the lead partners in the project, IIASA is conducting extensive research to analyze the links between climate change, human mobility and security in South-Eastern Europe. IIASA is leading the quantitative part of the analysis, which will be presented in a state-of-the-art report that includes an assessment of current migration patterns and the development of future mobility scenarios. The project team is facilitating regional dialogue by participating in multi-stakeholder workshops and contributing to the development of a regional roadmap aimed at fostering cooperation and addressing challenges related to climate change, migration and security, producing evidence-based insights and actionable strategies to strengthen resilience and regional cooperation.

Key Goals of the Project:

  • Data Collection and Analysis:
    • Compile and analyze data on climate conditions, migration flows, demographic trends, and socio-economic indicators.
    • Use statistical methods to quantify the relationship between climatic factors, migration patterns, and socio-economic vulnerability, including a gendered perspective.
    • Identify hotspots of climate-induced human mobility and data gaps.
  • Scenario Development:
    • Develop future human mobility scenarios based on different climate, demographic, and socio-economic assumptions.
    • Use a combination of qualitative insights and quantitative projections to explore potential interactions between climate change impacts and migration dynamics.
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Conduct regional multi-stakeholder workshops to validate findings, refine scenarios, and gather insights from experts, policymakers, civil society and local researchers.
    • Facilitate stakeholder dialogue and collaboration to ensure the inclusiveness and relevance of the research.
  • Collaborative Report Writing:
    • Co-author a state-of-the-art report, that synthesizes findings from quantitative and qualitative analyses with contributions from project partners and regional experts.
  • Regional Roadmap Development:
    • Provide actionable recommendations to address the local challenges identified.
    • Translate research findings into a roadmap for concrete regional cooperation.
    • Outline strategies and actions to enhance resilience, mitigate risks, and address security challenges related to climate change and migration.
  • Dissemination and Capacity Building:
    • Share findings and lessons learned through workshops, publications, and events to raise awareness and build capacities among regional stakeholders.
    • Promote knowledge sharing and best practices in addressing climate-related security risks.
