Populations of Europe are ever changing, requiring new policies and adaptations. What are the goals and tools of modern population policies? How can we respond, anticipate, and proactively mitigate demographic challenges? Building on the work of the Finnish Populations Policy Project, the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office and IIASA are holding an interactive seminar featuring leading global experts of demographic change and ageing societies to examine the causes of the current demographic situation in Finland and to discuss policy recommendations, aimed at forward-looking sustainable demographic development.

Nadejda Komendantova from the Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA) program gives a talk on "Factors of awareness and social support for energy transition" at the workshop "Activating People for Energy Transition in the Baltic Sea Region". The workshop is dedicated to the role of public acceptance and bottom-up grassroots movements in energy transition and is organised by the University of Greifswald, Germany. The talk is based on the experience of the Austrian Climate and Energy Model Regions (LINKS) project.

Her experience was gained by analysing regional strategies of regional development of the Austrian Climate and Energy Model regions as well as from the team work (with Elena Rovenskaya, Nikita Strelkovskii and Love Ekenberg) in preparation of the Strategy of Sustainable Industrial Development for Kyrgyzstan.

The aim of the first consultation of the Advisory Group “Emerging trade routes between Europe and Asia” scenario-building project is to collect critical comments and suggestions of the Advisory Group Members to the envisaged methodology of the project. Several candidate global scenario frameworks pre-selected by the project team are discussed. An attempt is made to prioritize one framework to serve as an overarching framework within which regional scenarios focusing on shipping in the Arctic are positioned.

IIASA’s RISK and Resilience Program researchers, as part of the Flood Resilience Alliance, collaborated with various partners across development, research and private sectors in a virtual learning event. The annual event took a step in the virtual direction this year due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. IIASA Alliance members pointed out that 'learning and interpersonal connections can take place successfully remotely and that even a multiple-day event can take place online'.
