The Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services (AFE) Group is pleased to announce that the kick-off meeting for IEA Bioenergy TCP Task 44 will take place on March 25–26, 2025, at IIASA in Laxenburg, Austria. This meeting marks the beginning of a new phase in Task 44’s efforts to advance research on Bioeconomy system integration aspects within the International Energy Agency (IEA) Technology Collaboration Programme (TCP).
Fabian Schipfer, Research Scholar at IIASA, assumes International Task Leadership of IEA Bioenergy TCP Task 44, focusing on how Bioeconomy practices can provide valuable flexibility to embrace uncertainties in and beyond the power grid.
This meeting will gather experts and delegates from seven member countries, including Austria, Germany, Finland, Sweden, Canada, the Netherlands, and the European Commission. Participants will discuss the future direction of Task 44 and collaborative efforts to advance bioenergy research, development, and implementation, especially in combination with electrification, hydrogen, industry, and carbon management strategies.
The IEA TCP supports global cooperation among member states, enabling governments, intergovernmental organizations, academic institutions, and industries to drive innovation in energy technologies. As part of this initiative, Task 44 plays a crucial role in exploring how bioenergy can be effectively integrated into energy systems to enhance sustainability and reliability, leverage synergies between different energy vectors, and in the energy-materials-food-water nexus.
The meeting is closed to invited participants only.
Furthermore, Florian Kraxner, AFE Research Group Leader and Principal Research Scholar, is the National Team Lead and Delegate to the IEA Bioenergy TCP Task 45 on Climate and Sustainability Effects of Bioenergy within the Circular Bioeconomy. Task 45, part of the IEA Bioenergy TCP, focuses on evaluating the climate and sustainability impacts of bioenergy and biobased systems to ensure their responsible development within the broader bioeconomy.
With this double leadership role in the current Triennium (2025-2027), IIASA can foster international collaboration and guide innovation processes with direct communication channels to relevant government officials and stakeholders.
