Biography

Fabian Schipfer is a research scholar in the Agriculture, Forestry, and Ecosystem Services Research Group of the IIASA Biodiversity and Natural Resources Program.

His research aims to guide the development and implementation of technology, infrastructure, processes, and systems through reliable and equitable transformation. In recent years, he advocated science and the work of international organizations as a coordinator of the grassroots movement Scientists 4 Future and as a national team lead in the International Energy Agency Technology Collaboration Programmes (IEA TCPs).

In the current triennium (2025-2027) of the IEA Bioenergy TCP he is the international task lead of Task44 on “Bioeconomy system integration and flexible bioenergy.” In this Task, delegates from seven member states discuss the opportunities that arise from using bioenergy technologies to respond flexibly to fluctuating conditions.

Schipfer received his PhD from the Technische Universitat (TU) Wien in Austria, working as part of the Energy Economics Group. His postdoctoral work brought him to the Bioeconomy in Transition Group of the Unitelma Sapienza in Rome, Italy, with a Fulbright stipend to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, United States, and to the Institute of Chemical and Environmental Engineering at TU Wien.
