Drought Management Focal Persons welcomed to the INTERVENE Project in first meeting.

This inception meeting introducted the Drought Management Focal Persons to the project, its scope, project plan and next steps.

The meeting was attended by Lake Victoria Basin Comission's Deputy Executive Secretary, Coletha Ruhamya who gave a warm welcome to all participants and emphasised the importance of the project for the EAC.

INTERVENE's Fellowship Students were also invited to attend, giving them the opportunity to witness first hand how research is set-up for policy activities.

Colleagues,  I want to reiterate that INTERVENE Project is not just a research project, it
is a collaborative regional pathway towards a drought-resilient East Africa.

IIASA scientists also presented technical aspects of the project.

Economist Julian Jospeh presented models of the economy-wide effects of droughts.

The sessions explored how droughts impact the economy through channels such as; agricultural production, hydropower, or household water supply.

Presenters highlighted the scientific study carried out at IIASA to explore how women, men, and various sectors of EAC economies can utilise drought resilience strategies to manage potential effects of future droughts.
