The need to reduce global emissions by shifting away from fossil fuels is evident in the concluding agreements of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UNFCCC. But what about addressing current atmospheric emissions? Central Asia, with its diverse nations and ecosystems, offers a distinctive platform for mitigating existing emissions through carbon farming practices and nature-based solutions.

From Earth Observation Data to Policy Impact

In a new article just published in The Conversation, IIASA researcher Caroline Zimm, Steven R. Smith and Tim Lenton shed light on the domino effect of positive tipping points and offer insights into the demanding legwork required to catalyze the widespread sustainable transformations outlined in the landmark Global Tipping Points Report recently launched at COP28 in Dubai.

IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment researcher, Giacomo Falchetta, received the Best Online Poster Award at the Integrated Assessment Modeling Consortium (IAMC)’s recent Sixteenth Annual Meeting in Venice, Italy, for his project focusing on integrated modeling of renewable energy-centered sustainable development futures in rural Africa.

The Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program will host the third MESSAGEix Community Meeting in May 2024. The meeting aims to bring together researchers working on integrated assessment and/or energy system modeling using open source software.
