IIASA Distinguished Visiting Fellow Sir Peter Gluckman will speak at a virtual public lecture offered by IIASA and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. Drawing on lessons learned from the pandemic and findings from the IIASA-ISC Consultative Science Platform he will suggest pathways forwards that can enable the transformative changes needed for a safe and healthy planet.
IIASA scientists are contributing to the IPCC Working Group III Sixth Assessment Report (AR6). Author teams will be gathering virtually to work on the final draft taking into account the tens of thousands of comments which were submitted during the second round of reviews from external experts.
The 6th Viennese Talks on Resilience and Networks is co-organized by IIASA and FASresearch. In an effort to support a convergence of ideas between systems ecology, complexity, ecomimcry, sustainability, networks, resilience and "building back better", authors of the recently published book “A New Ecology: Systems Perspective” are meeting in this workshop to provide insight into ecological principles.
World Water Day held annually on 22 March, celebrates water and raises awareness of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis. A core focus of World Water Day is to support the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Water and sanitation for all by 2030.
Nadejda Komendantova from the Cooperation and Transformative Governance group is invited to provide an opening keynote presentation at the VIII International Workshop on Critical Infrastructures in the Digital World. The aim of the workshop is to discuss theoretical and methodological issues of development and integration of intelligent, agent-based and cloud computing for contingency management in critical infrastructures as well as to talk about Situational Awareness, Semiotics, Visual Analytics, Semantic Modeling and Cognitive Graphics and their applications in critical infrastructures.
IIASA researcher Nadejda Komendantova will give a keynote speech at the International Conference of the Institute of National Planning on Digital Economy and Sustainable Development. She will present her perspective on the role that systems analysis can play in supporting the digital transformation.
Dmitry Erokhin is invited to speak on the determinants of Chinese outward foreign direct investment in the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) countries with the special focus on the institutional environment of the host countries at the International Workshop “China's Belt and Road Initiative: curse or blessing for democracy in Eurasia?”.
The INQUIMUS workshop has been postponed to Winter 2021. IIASA’s Population and Just Societies Program together with the Advanced Systems Analysis Program will host the INQUIMUS workshop series entitled Risk management and Loss & Damage: What are suitable approaches for assessing climate-related (residual) risks?". The workshop will focus on the pressing issue of climate-related risks that may go beyond social and physical limits for adaptation.
IIASA researcher Alexia Fürnkranz-Prskawetz and IIASA alumnus Verena Winiwarter will speak at this year’s Joint Academy Day between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada. Discussion will focus on global challenges such as food security, environmental change, poverty, and sustainable responses to Covid-19.
