Thomas Schinko represents IIASA in panel discussion on the effects of the climate and the COVID crisis.

Dr. Thomas Schinko represented IIASA in a panel discussion organised by the Certified Management Consultants (CMC) and the Certified Supervisory Experts (CSE). The CMC Masters Club panel discussion was aimed at providing answers to a provoking question: "COVID-19 - and now what?"
In his keynote speech, Dr. Schinko argued that the COVID crisis is distracting us from the climate crisis, which is the real crisis for humanity. Researcher Schinko observed that Austria would need to take increasingly ambitious climate action to reach the 1.5 or 2 degrees Celsius target envisioned in the Paris Agreement. he argues that tackling the climate crisis is a challenge for society but it also opens up new opportunities for the economy. In this context, management consultants play a crucial role in the transformation of the economy. The keynote speech was followed by lively discussions with experts and participants.
The Paris Agreement
The Paris Agreement was adopted by 196 parties at COP 21 in Paris on 12 December 2015. It is a legally binding international treaty on climate change that aims to limit the global temperature rise in the 21st century to 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels and to curb it further to an increase of 1.5 degrees Celsius. The long-term goal is to reach a climate neutral world by mid-century.
