The mining of coal, metals, and other minerals causes loss of natural habitats across the entire globe. However, available data is insufficient to measure the extent of these impacts. IIASA alumnus Victor Maus and his colleagues mapped more than 57,000 km² of mining areas over the whole world using satellite images.

Nadejda Komendantova from the Advanced Systems Analysis program is invited to speak at the The International Urban Forum "Territory of the Future. View from the Heart of Eurasia" and gives a talk on "Monocities: challenges and models of socio-economic development and financing". Her experience was gained by analysing regional strategies of regional development of the Austrian Climate and Energy Model regions as well as from the team work (with Elena Rovenskaya, Nikita Strelkovskii and Love Ekenberg) in preparation of the Strategy of Sustainable Industrial Development for Kyrgyzstan.

The aim of the first consultation of the Advisory Group “Emerging trade routes between Europe and Asia” scenario-building project is to collect critical comments and suggestions of the Advisory Group Members to the envisaged methodology of the project. Several candidate global scenario frameworks pre-selected by the project team are discussed. An attempt is made to prioritize one framework to serve as an overarching framework within which regional scenarios focusing on shipping in the Arctic are positioned.

In light of the new strategic plan that will become operational in 2021, IIASA has appointed four program directors to lead new research programs. Raya Muttarak, Keywan Riahi, Elena Rovenskaya, and Yoshihide Wada will form part of the scientific leadership that will address the institute’s research priorities to ensure that program objectives are aligned with the new IIASA strategy and institute values.
