H.E. Ambassador DDr Stephan Klement, Head of Delegation of the European Union to the International Organisations in Vienna, met with IIASA Director General Albert van Jaarsveld to discuss IIASA research and potential to strengthen further IIASA-EU scientific collaboration.

Populations of Europe are ever changing, requiring new policies and adaptations. What are the goals and tools of modern population policies? How can we respond, anticipate, and proactively mitigate demographic challenges? Building on the work of the Finnish Populations Policy Project, the Finnish Prime Minister’s Office and IIASA are holding an interactive seminar featuring leading global experts of demographic change and ageing societies to examine the causes of the current demographic situation in Finland and to discuss policy recommendations, aimed at forward-looking sustainable demographic development.

Nadejda Komendantova is invited to speak at the session on Mitigating Trans-Border Environmental Risks and Challenges of the 2020 OSCE Asian Conference on Multilateral Responses to the Global Security Challenges.  The conference is co-organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs of the Slovak Republic and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). The main topic of the conference is “Multilateral responses to the global security challenges”.  

Nadejda Komendantova is invited to give a keynote presentation on "Intelligent information technologies  approach to sustainability studies of energy, social and environmental systems" at the International Scientific Conference on "Sustainable Energy Development of the Republic of Belarus: State and Prospects". The conference is organized by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and Republican Research and Production Unitary Enterprise "Institute of Power Engineering". 

IIASA and UNCCD Secretariat have strengthened their cooperation on facilitating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through signing a Memorandum of Understanding.    

‘Risk and Resilience’ Acting Program Director Reinhard Mechler presented research on transformational responses to climate change as undertaken through collaborative efforts of the Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance.

Risk and Resilience Research Scholar Susanne Hanger-Kopp will be speaking at a virtual workshop on 'Transition risk governance: Smoothing the path to a low-carbon economy and society' with the EPFL International Risk Governance Center (IRGC) .

World Population Program Director Wolfgang Lutz will speak at the U.S. National Academy of Sciences workshop on science, technology and health capabilities.

Nadejda Komendantova from the Advanced Systems Analysis program is invited to speak at the The International Urban Forum "Territory of the Future. View from the Heart of Eurasia" and gives a talk on "Monocities: challenges and models of socio-economic development and financing". Her experience was gained by analysing regional strategies of regional development of the Austrian Climate and Energy Model regions as well as from the team work (with Elena Rovenskaya, Nikita Strelkovskii and Love Ekenberg) in preparation of  the Strategy of Sustainable Industrial Development for Kyrgyzstan. 

IIASA in collaboration with the Russian Presidential Academy of National Economy and Public Administration is hosting an online symposium to share recent research and discuss challenges that demographers may face in studying demographic consequences of COVID-19.

The World in 2050 Initiative meets virtually to work on its next report focusing on innovations for sustainability and implications of COVID-19

In light of a global health crisis unlike any other in our lifetime, the co-organizers of the Vienna Energy Forum (VEF) – the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, the Austrian Development Agency, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis – have decided to postpone the Vienna Energy Forum to 2021. The new dates will be announced soon.

IIASA attendance at this event will not go ahead due to the current coronavirus situation and possible travel restrictions. IIASA Deputy Director General for Science Leena Srivastava will attend the inaugural STS Forum - Latin America and the Caribbean High-Level Conference.

The theme of the forum is - envisioning towards limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. 

Experts from across Europe will gather at IIASA for the first meeting of EMERGE - Evaluation, Control and Mitigation of the Environmental Impacts of Shipping, to find solutions to pollution caused by shipping.
