The INQUIMUS workshop has been postponed to Spring 2022. IIASA’s Population and Just Societies (POPJUS) Program together with the Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA) Program will host the INQUIMUS workshop series entitled "Transformational risk management and Loss & Damage: What are suitable approaches for assessing climate-related (residual) risks?". The workshop will focus on the pressing issue of climate-related risks that may go beyond social and physical limits for adaptation.

The IIASA Population and Just Societies Program, the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the University of Vienna are co-organizing the Wittgenstein Centre Conference 2021, which will focus on population decline and its consequences.

This kick-off event serves to introduce the Strategic Initiatives project FairSTREAM to IIASA colleagues and associates, as well as to start the conversation on one concrete topic at the heart of FairSTREAM work: stakeholder engagement and knowledge co-production at IIASA. The project is an in-house collaboration by the Equity and Justice (EQU), Water Security (WAT), and Biodiversity, Ecology, & Conservation (BEC) IIASA Research Groups to advance trans-disciplinary research and upscaling via agent-based modelling at the food-water-biodiversity nexus.

IIASA Regional Conference "Systems Analysis in Eurasia" will take place on 13-15 April 2021 as a hybrid event, combining online and in person attendance. The physical part of the meeting will be hosted by the National University of Science and Technology MISIS (NUST MISIS) in Moscow, Russia. 

Since its founding in 2008 by a joint initiative of IIASA, the Austrian Government, and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the Vienna Energy Forum (VEF) has assembled thinkers and practitioners from all over the world to discuss practical solutions to sustainable development challenges and pave the way for tangible partnerships on the ground.

Pollution Management Research Group Leader Zbigniew Klimont is a speaker at an online event held to publicise the EU-funded initiative: Action on Black Carbon in the Arctic.

The 6th Viennese Talks on Resilience and Networks is co-organized by IIASA and FASresearch. In an effort to support a convergence of ideas between systems ecology, complexity, ecomimcry, sustainability, networks, resilience and "building back better", authors of the recently published book “A New Ecology: Systems Perspective” are meeting in this workshop to provide insight into ecological principles. 

IIASA researcher Alexia Fürnkranz-Prskawetz and IIASA alumnus Verena Winiwarter will speak at this year’s Joint Academy Day between the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada. Discussion will focus on global challenges such as food security, environmental change, poverty, and sustainable responses to Covid-19.

The VEF Virtual Series aims to progress agreed recommendations and deliver policy briefs with action-oriented solutions in targeted locations, and to assist countries around the world to align their recovery efforts in a sustainable way.

Nadejda Komendantova is invited to speak at the meeting on Scientific cooperation organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Paraguay in Austria. The meeting is dedicated to the Austrian experience and energy policy. H.E. Ambassador Juan Facetti provides opening remarks at the meeting. 

Risk and Resilience Deputy Program Director Thomas Schinko will participate in a panel discussion within the 7th Climate & Environment Film Festival in Baden.

The Committee on Data of the International Science Council (CODATA) exists to promote global collaboration to improve the availability and usability of data for all areas of research. IIASA is organizing a joint IIASA-CODATA workshop on Big Data and Systems Analysis to continue investigating the possibilities and potential benefits of strengthening this collaboration.

Nadejda Komendantova from the Advanced Systems Analysis (ASA) program gives a talk on "Factors of awareness and social support for energy transition" at the workshop "Activating People for Energy Transition in the Baltic Sea Region". The workshop is dedicated to the role of public acceptance and bottom-up grassroots movements in energy transition and is organised by the University of Greifswald, Germany. The talk is based on the experience of the Austrian Climate and Energy Model Regions (LINKS) project.

IIASA and UNCCD Secretariat have strengthened their cooperation on facilitating the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through signing a Memorandum of Understanding.

In light of a global health crisis unlike any other in our lifetime, the co-organizers of the Vienna Energy Forum (VEF) – the Austrian Federal Ministry for European and International Affairs, the Austrian Development Agency, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis – have decided to postpone the Vienna Energy Forum to 2021. The new dates will be announced soon.

The event has been postponed to a later date due to the current coronavirus situation and possible travel restrictions. The 6th Viennese Talks on Resilience and Networks is co-organized by IIASA and FASresearch. The event is dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the results and insights about the guiding principles of collaboration for climate mitigation and adaptation in terms of the “Theory of Plural Rationalities".
