IIASA Director General, Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber will deliver a plenary keynote speech at the upcoming 2nd European Science Diplomacy Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark during which he will highlight the legacy of IIASA as a beacon of science diplomacy, the challenges in the current geopolitical environment, and possible solutions to facilitate international agreements across geopolitical divides through science. 

The Energy, Climate, and Environment (ECE) Program will host the fifth MESSAGE Community Meeting in May 2026. The meeting brings together researchers working on integrated assessment and/or energy system modeling using open source software including MESSAGEix.

The Earth Observation for Official Statistics and policy indicators reporting (StatEO26) Conference will focuses on integrating Earth Observation (EO) into national statistics and policy reporting to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and spatial detail of key indicators, including those used in natural capital assessments, agricultural monitoring, and GHG emission reporting, supporting policy implementation and simplified transversal reporting.

The Association for Forest Spatial Analysis Technologies (ForestSAT) will host its 2026 international conference in Gainesville, Florida, bringing together experts to share the latest advances in forestry, remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and geospatial technologies. Dmitry Shchepashchenko (IIASA) plans to attend and deliver presentations at the conference. He also serves as a member of its Scientific Committee.

Starting on 15 January 2026 and running for two weeks, the traveling exhibition "Climate and Me" will be on display in Laxenburg, offering the public a chance to engage with new perspectives on climate action. The opening event features a keynote by IIASA Director General Hans Joachim (John) Schellnhuber, whose insights highlight the Institute’s leadership in shaping a sustainable future.

On Wednesday, 10 December, IIASA will host a class from the Vienna Sir Karl Popper school for a half-day workshop to explore systems thinking through the life cycle analysis of a chocolate bar.

IIASA will co-host a session with the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa under the title, People, planet, and possibility: systems science meets journalism for wellbeing, at the 2025 World Conference of Science Journalists in Pretoria, South Africa.

On Friday, 14 November, the UNDERPIN team will participate in the Expert Meeting on Economic Losses from Weather- and Climate-Related Extremes, hosted by the European Environment Agency (EEA). The event brings together researchers, policymakers, and data providers to discuss advances in tracking and harmonizing evidence on the economic impacts of climate extremes across Europe. With recent years marking record-high losses from climate-related disasters, the meeting aims to explore how improved indicators, data interoperability, and methodological transparency can better inform adaptation strategies, disaster risk reduction, and resilience investments.
