IIASA is partner and work package leader on EMERGE - Evaluation, control and Mitigation of the Environmental impacts of shipping, an innovative 4-year research project looking to find solutions to pollution caused by shipping. IIASA collaborates with 18 organizations across Europe on the project which is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program.

UNCNET is a three-year project funded under the Joint Programming Initiative Urban Europe in collaboration with the Chinese National Science Foundation. It tackles existing and future challenges of urban sustainability that are closely connected to the fate of reactive nitrogen compounds.

Urban metabolism is a model to study the flow of energy and resources as they enter cities, how they are used and consumed, and how they exist cities as wastes. By studying urban metabolism, we can get a better understanding of how resources are used and ways to reduce negative environmental impact. As the fraction of people living in cities continue to expand around the world, urban metabolism analysis can help decision makers develop cities to become resource efficient, climate friendly, resilient and equitable.

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has appointed a new group of ten renowned experts including IIASA Energy, Climate, and Environment Program Director, Keywan Riahi, to support the UN Technology Facilitation Mechanism to bring science into the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A new report released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) assessed the biophysical and economic benefits of air pollution policies in Arctic Council countries. The analysis relied on a suite of modeling tools, including the IIASA GAINS model, to project the impacts of increasingly ambitious policy action up to 2050.
