IIASA is partner and work package leader on EMERGE - Evaluation, control and Mitigation of the Environmental impacts of shipping, an innovative 4-year research project looking to find solutions to pollution caused by shipping. IIASA collaborates with 18 organizations across Europe on the project which is funded by the European Commission under the Horizon 2020 program.

Measures to reduce air pollution from ships can have negative impacts on water quality and marine life. The aim of EMERGE is to understand these trade-offs, assess their relevance for the different sea regions in Europe, and to identify the best possible emission controls.

The project is coordinated by the Finnish Meteorological Institute and the Swedish Environmental Research Institute. The EMERGE consortium aims to come up with a first assessment of the impact of ship emissions to air and water for the whole of Europe. The IIASA Air Quality and Greenhouse Gases Program contributes its expertise on environmental impact and cost-benefit assessments.
