The IDRiM Society will hold the IDRiM Virtual Workshop for Interactive Discussions between Senior and Early-Career Scientists on 23-24 September 2020. This will provide an opportunity for engagement and the exchange of ideas and discussions for both experienced scientists and early-career researchers.

The global COVID-19 crisis is challenging the social fabric of countries and communities across the globe. Interventions such as lockdowns, social distancing measures, and economic stimulus packages have been introduced to reinforce societal resilience. The resilience of national health systems is particularly in the spotlight – primarily keeping occupancy numbers of intensive care beds under a critical threshold, as well as improving access to basic health services for people infected with the virus, and ensuring that infections do not spread further.

IIASA’s RISK and Resilience Program researchers, as part of the Flood Resilience Alliance, collaborated with various partners across development, research and private sectors in a virtual learning event. The annual event took a step in the virtual direction this year due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. IIASA Alliance members pointed out that 'learning and interpersonal connections can take place successfully remotely and that even a multiple-day event can take place online'.

The 6th Viennese Talks on Resilience and Networks is co-organized by IIASA and FASresearch.
The event is dedicated to the presentation and discussion of the results and insights about the guiding principles of collaboration for climate mitigation and adaptation in terms of the “Theory of Plural Rationalities".

On 16th- 17th January 2020, Risk and Resilience Program Senior Science Advisor John Handmer, at the invitation of the OECD, attended the 'Adapting to a changing climate in the management of wildfires' conference where he spoke on Understanding the socio-economic costs of wildfires, Wildfire impact in the "new normal".

Impact Sheet #2, November 2014. Natural disasters, particularly in developing countries, can swamp governments’ ability to support the relief and reconstruction process. Through its catastrophe simulation (CATSIM) model, IIASA has helped many governments to identify their financial and economic resilience and design efficient and appropriate risk-management and -financing strategies, putting governments into a position to proactively tackle the increasing burdens from natural disasters.

Imact Sheet #3, November 2014. Overfishing not only reduces the size of fish populations, it can alter their actual gene pool. In 1998 IIASA began researching fisheries-induced evolution with the aim of i) developing methodological tools to evaluate the evolutionary and ecological consequences of overfishing and ii) using resulting insights to identify evolutionarily sustainable management strategies.
