Claudius Ströhle shares findings from his fieldwork in Austria to help you better understand the delicate balance between inflow, outflow, and return migration.
Return migration is more than just a demographic trend. It’s an open door to better understand regional resilience, integration challenges, and overlooked opportunities.
Cooperation between industry, regional policymakers and recruitment agencies can help remote areas to attract highly skilled labour migrants. However, these areas often lack social onboarding after the migrants have settled in, which leads to the newly arrived workers migrating to other, more urban areas within the country. What are the mobility patterns of migrants to rural areas? How can rural areas develop a sustainable way of attracting and retaining highly skilled migrants? Drawing on qualitative interviews with migrants and stakeholders in the Austrian states of Styria and Carinthia, Claudius Ströhle from Multidimensional Demographic Modeling Research Group (MDM) will address these issues by focusing on the experiences and perspectives of those involved.
This event combines fresh empirical research with live reflection and debate. It will challenge common assumptions about migration while offering practical insights for policymakers, researchers, and regional stakeholders.
