As co-organizer of the symposium hosted by the Commission on the De-Fossilization and Carbon Neutrality of the European Energy Systems (DEE) at the Austrian Academy of Sciences, IIASA's Dr. Thomas Schinko will open the event by highlighting the importance of a systemic and interdisciplinary view for a successful transformation of energy systems. Moreover, he will emphasize the necessity to foster justice, equity, and collaboration in shaping Europe’s path toward a carbon-neutral future.
The upcoming symposium will be centered around three high-level keynote presentations and take a deep dive into the systemic transformation required for the de-fossilization of Europe’s energy system. Recognizing that this monumental shift depends on both technological innovation and societal change, the event will focus on the interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary challenges that arise in navigating the energy transition. A key theme will be the exploration of what constitutes a “Just Transition”—how differing perceptions of fairness and justice can lead to conflicts, and how these can be addressed through inclusive policymaking and effective communication strategies.
Thomas Schinko, Research Group Leader of the Equity and Justice Research Group (EQU), will open the event with introductory remarks, framing the discussions around the justice, equity, and societal dimensions of Europe’s path toward a sustainable and carbon-neutral future.
